2 weeds or not 2 weeds?
I would like ANet to consider putting in a whitelist for character names, which appears not to exist.
Yesterday I created a new character whose lastname was supposed to be "mayweed"
I checked the internet for aprox. 1 hour to find a nice plantname that starts with "may", and I was glad to find out, that "mayweed" not only has a nice ring to it (to my ears) but is actually a nice plant (from my pov).
I was surprised to find out, that the name was rejected because of the ending "weed".
Now, whatever the meaning of "weed" might mean to some people, for me it's plant related.
I do understand the importance of having a negative list for names, though that has been worked around in one way or the other.
But the way I see it, there is no positive list.
And if there is a positive list, "mayweed" should definately be on it.

Oh, don't worry. It's plant related for them, too.

Whoa! Use the edit button. That's why we have one.
I've seen a few names that were *'d during chat, but not anywhere else. I found them amusing.

Heh, I always read it as
RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO
Red and Go being at the start and end, and Engine Gored repeated between for some reason. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, theres some odd things that are blocked and shouldn't be, and some things that aren't blocked, and should be. It's hard to catch everything, considering the fact that everyone always wants to find a way around it. Even if you blocked every profanity or whatever you want to call it, they'll just keep spamming it with spaces in between the letters.

Well, you posted several times. Right after the other. When you could've clicked the edit button and edited all of that stuff into one.

That's already enough to get posts baned?
Now I'm confused.
I thought it was because of the red engine thing.
Seriously: What is it with profanity?
I don't want it, that's for sure. If I have people using foul language on my team I advise them to stop it.
But nobody came up with a truely serious concept on how to block profanity. In GW and even here you get too many false positives.
So people get offended by words. But what if they read a line like
"you ----ing ----, i hate you ----ers, i own you ---er"
Those people offended by the f-word probably are intelligent enough to fill in the missing letters in the above line.
So they know that profanity is used.
Now, are they offended by the word, or the profanity it implies?
Even in this thread you can read about workarounds, like replacing the letter 'U' with a '*' or a 'V' or the letter 'O' with a '0'.
Some people like those words and they'll always find a way to bring it out into the open so everybody can understand it.
So where's the real protection against profanity?

There is none. ANet does ban people for this, though. If you read in the post Gaile made. That's player harrassment. And that is bad.
And your posts weren't bad, just deleted I suppose.

Shagsbeard didn't make it either. I've been using that name for years and no one has been offended by it. But it's A.net's call. We play by their rules or we choose not to play. It's not that big of a deal for me. There are far more offensive names than 'Mayweed' out there.

Probably right. There's another "my way or the highway" thread going on.
I'm ok with rules, but rules can be changed, adpoted, improved.
I was suggesting the implementation of a white-list with names that, although they get a hit on the black-list, get approved finally by the white-list.
EDIT:
Can I use the name Harry Potter? I don't know.
It's got the term *pot* in it which, according to some other thread in the RiversideInn is a clear reference to drugs.
